Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common KiwiSaver questions, from how it works to joining or making changes, and understanding when you may be able to access your savings.

KiwiSaver is a voluntary savings scheme designed to help New Zealanders build wealth for retirement and, in some cases, a first-home purchase.

If you’re employed, contributions are generally deducted automatically from your pay. You can choose to contribute 3.5%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10% of your gross salary or wages. In most cases, your employer will also contribute a minimum of 3.5% of your gross salary, helping your savings grow even faster.

If you’re eligible, the Government may also contribute 25 cents for every dollar you contribute to KiwiSaver, up to a maximum of $260.72 each year. Together, your contributions, employer contributions and government support can make a significant difference to your long-term financial future.

Small changes to your KiwiSaver can make a big difference over time. You can transfer to another KiwiSaver provider and or switch the funds that you are invested in whenever you choose, however we strongly advise that you seek sound investment advice before making any changes.

Regularly reviewing your fund and contribution rate help ensure you’re making the most of the opportunities available to protect your savings. You can change and alter how much you are contributing into KiwiSaver by changing the contribution percentage with your employer and or choosing to make voluntary contributions if you are self-employed or not working.

Most New Zealand citizens or permanent residents that normally live in New Zealand and are entitled to live here indefinitely can join KiwiSaver.

Enrolment in KiwiSaver will be automatic for all those starting a new job (with some exceptions), and although employees are automatically enrolled they do have the chance to opt out within a certain time frame. For those who are self-employed or not working our advisers can help you find the right KiwiSaver fund and contribution rate to suit your situation.

KiwiSaver is designed to help you save for retirement, so in most cases your savings are locked in until you reach age 65. However, there are some circumstances where you may be able to access your funds earlier, including purchasing your first home, experiencing significant financial hardship, serious illness, or permanently moving overseas.

Every situation is different, and eligibility requirements apply. Our advisers can help you understand your options and guide you through the withdrawal process if you’re considering accessing your KiwiSaver savings.
